A few days back, I was happily reading a book in my room. Suddenly, my mother came in. She took one glance at my room and said, “Your room looks like a gorur khamar. Although she is not incorrect, I was initially offended. Everything screams chaos: clothes on the table, books in the wardrobe. I said to myself. Enough living like this; let’s make this room livable. After googling for a while, I came across the term “ZEN.”
Zen:
The word Zen arrives from the Japanese word “禅,” which originated from the Chinese word “禅” (chán), which means “meditation”. The philosophy of Zen focuses mainly on simplicity, mindfulness, and inner peace.
Spreading from China to Japan, the concept of Zen has spread all over the world. In today’s chaotic world, Zen has become a way to reconnect with mindfulness and balance. It’s about creating a quiet moment for ourselves to sit with our thoughts.
Creating your zen sanctuary at home:
Zen is making its way to our home. Creating a zen space will relieve us immediately from the chaos of the outside world and give us a sense of tranquility. Let’s look at six ways we can turn our home into a zen sanctuary:
1. Declutter your space:
First, start by taking out the items you don’t need. We collect things in the name of memory, but we forget they even existed once. So it’s time to let them go. Decluttering will also give you a moment to relive the memories of the item. It reminded me of an episode from Fresh off the Boat. When Emery struggled to let his things go, his mother, Jessica, came up with a thoughtful idea. She suggested he take pictures of all the things and write about the memories. You can try that too. Click pictures and add a note.
2. Calming wall
While painting your house, try to choose a color that will calm you. Light blue or cream white will be a wonderful choice. You might want to avoid yellow and orange. If you cannot color, try to hang minimal posters that will remind you of calmness. Avoid cluttering pictures or paper cuttings, or plan them perfectly.
3. Let the window open
If you have windows in your room, keep them half open. This will bring both light and natural air into your room. If you are worried about privacy, use light curtains that will still let a bit of sunlight in. Keeping the windows closed all day creates a depressing ambiance.
4. Keep natural material:
We know Zen mostly focuses on nature. So try to keep a bit of nature in your room. Small rocks in a tub with water, bamboo decoration, and a plant will create a natural scene. If you are worried about taking care of plants, you can get a money plant. They are easy to take care of, as only a little water and minimal sunlight are enough.
5. Create a meditation space:
Meditation helps to create peace and sort out our thoughts. So, try to create a meditation corner. Select an empty corner in your room, place a cushion, and add calming decor. Meditation will let you find inner peace.
6. Sound:
A relaxing background noise will help in relieving stress and creating focus while doing work. You can try Tibetan flute noise, rain sound, or river sound as your white noise.
So these are some tricks that I found from my hours of Googling. Plans are ready; I just need to implement them, and finally, my room will look like a room again.
