The Genie of Our Lamp: Youth Reflections on the Widespread Use of Artificial Intelligence
In those curious days of my childhood, I always imagined having someone who could answer all of my questions. My first introduction to Artificial Intelligence was in the 9th grade. It was just typical bookish knowledge. The widespread use of AI over the past couple of years is showing its strength, whereas in the early days, Artificial Intelligence was mostly used for rules and programs. However, the evaluation of AI is evolving in terms of dormancy, validity, and accuracy. Let’s discuss the widespread use of Artificial Intelligence.
Shifting Human Behaviour and the Rise of AI
The extensive use of artificial intelligence is the aftermath of drastic changes in human behavior and other phenomena. In the last few years, psychosocial factors have changed human behaviors rapidly and increased technological dependency in our interactions. This is one of the circumstances that increased the use of technology in a crucial sense. However, the increasing use of AI has many aspects to notice. So, I have tried to know what our youth is thinking about the widespread use of artificial intelligence.
Voices from the Youth
- Rehan, a college student, is preparing for his Higher Secondary Exam. His opinion about the exhaustive use of AI is quite mixed.
Rehan said, “Using AI for educational purposes is good for me. I have class tests and assignments to complete, but these tasks are time-consuming. By using AI, I can accumulate my time. I prefer self-study to enhance my skills. But AI is helping me govern these tasks and make an efficient use of my time”.
Rehan’s statement conveys an observation of the impacts of AI in academia. However, students tend to misuse AI, and that can create risks for educators and researchers. It can blunt the problem-solving strategies and sharpness of students.
- Aronno recently completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Jahangirnagar University and is preparing for his job. Exploring tech applications is his hobby.
Aronno said, “Human beings can’t even imagine what they have made! We are still exploring the simplest margin of AI”.
Recent additions of innovation in AI are evidence of Aronno’s statement.
The Arrival of Orion
- The latest release of OpenAI’s GPT-4.5, ‘Orion, ’ was released on 27th February 2025.
Experts claim that Orion is the smartest language model of OpenAI’s GPT series. But what are the benefits? Well! Orion can maintain an accurate flow of conversation and has upgraded writing skills. But what has caught my attention is the decreased rate of hallucination. In GPT-4.5, the hallucination rate has decreased from 61.8% to 37.5% compared to previous releases. Orion’s release and use can improve programming and problem-solving strategies for realistic issues.
Is AI as Creative as Us?
Is ‘Artificial Intelligence’ really that intelligent to match human creativity? What do the youth think about it?
- Aronno added, “AI is far more advanced than our imagination. The progress of AI is relentless, and it is impossible to stop it. Though it has both positive and negative impacts on mankind.”
- But Amrita, a student who is studying a B.Sc. in economics at Jahangirnagar University, has different observations.
She said, “I always loved to explore branches of knowledge through books, articles, and different write-ups. For the last year, I have been using ChatGPT-4 for some academic purposes. But for creative forage, the lack of creative intelligence in AI disappoints me so much. Artificial intelligence is good in some aspects. But I don’t think that it is that much ‘intelligent’ to match our pen’s magic in some comprehensive literature works.”
The Genie and the Werewolf
Monitoring the statements of individuals, I have to state that AI is currently playing the role of the genie that comes out of the lamp with just a rub. In whatever way, an article published on 9th December 2024 in The Economic Times piqued my curiosity. OpenAI’s model O1 showed an over-smartness to developers. Developers of Apollo Research bypassed a shutdown command, but the experiment raised concerns among the developers when O1 moved all of its data to avoid replacement. I mentioned this incident to provide an example of how much AI can be dangerous for us. In history, mankind has invented several innovative technologies for its own sake, but it is not that tough to see that an advantageous invention can also be destructive. In my statement, I have to state that AI is serviceable for us, but the genie of our lamp can be easily converted into a shape-shifting werewolf if we misuse the availability and accessibility of artificial intelligence.
