The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) was established in 1959. About 35,000 people have received Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships so far. 800 scholarships such as postgraduate, Ph.D., and split-site study awarded to young students and professionals from 53 Commonwealth countries. Financial grants are made through the UK Government’s Department for International Development or DFID through the Commonwealth Commission Secretariat, London.

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission is for opportunities from the least developed and lower-middle revenue Commonwealth countries. Moreover, it’s also offers full-time Master’s study on assigned courses, jointly funded by UK universities. Funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and LSHTM, the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSS) facilitates talented and motivated people to gain the knowledge and skills needed to support sustainable development. These scholarships are planned for talented individuals who have the potential to make a difference, and who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

This year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission UK (CSC) and LSHTM are offering one scholarship award under the CSC ‘Strengthening health strategies and capacity’ theme for the MSc global nutrition health program. LSHTM has a priority for applicants from The Gambia, Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi and India.

Each scholarship award will provide:

  • CSC-approved air access from the nearest international airport in the student’s home country to London, and return air access at the end of the award, for the student
  • MSc Nutrition for Global Health education fees (at the overseas fee rate, and including the mandatory field trip fee)
  • GBP 1,516.00 monthly supervision allowance (London metropolitan area rate).
  • Friendly clothing allowance, where applicable.
  • Repayment of required tuberculosis (TB) test fees, when instructed for a visa application, at a pre-determined amount set by the CSC.
  • Donations to contribute towards the study-related costs (thesis grant and study travel grant).
  • Excess luggage subsidy for return home up to the specific rate as set by the CSC.
  • Disability Support Allowance for personal living costs (if eligible).
  • For Scholars who are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, a child allowance of GBP 529.00 per month for the first child, and GBP 131.00 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if the children accompanying the student and are living with them at the same address in the UK.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must be a resident or have been awarded refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country or be a British Protected Person.
  • Applicants must be perpetually and constantly resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Applicants must be functional to start their academic studies in the UK at the start of the 2023-24 educational year (September 2023).
  • Applicants must hold a foremost degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard, or a lower second class level (2:2) plus a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree) by September 2023. CSC cannot receive job knowledge but rather of this minimum academic qualification. Please do not apply unless you meet the CSC minimum requirements.
  • Applicants must be sufficiently articulate in English to follow their proposed course of study and meet LSHTM’s English Language proficiency requirements.
  • Applicants must not have studied for one academic year or more in a high-income country (for CSC objectives this is organized as a country that does not seem on the (DAC list of ODA recipients)
  • Applicants must not have operated for one year or better in a high-income country (for CSC purposes this is organized as a nation that does not appear on the DAC list of ODA recipients)
  • Applicants must substantiate that not only they but also their families otherwise be able to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.
  • Applicants will be returned to their home country within one month of the end of their award.
  • Applicants must supply all supporting documentation mandatory.

Applicants should note that choices will be given to applicants from The Gambia, Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, and India. When assessing all eligible applications, the LSHTM team will assess possible effects alongside variety and under-representation.

The economic pension through the Commonwealth Scholarship is available throughout the course period. The scholarship program requests funding options for allowances, travel, and tuition fees. It is a transformative possibility for students with good educational records and economically vulnerable environments to study abroad.
