What is ISO

ISO stands for International Organization for Standards

It is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies.

ISO is a non-governmental organization affiliated with more than 160 countries. Each member country is represented by standards body. The American National Standards Institute represents the United States.

The purpose of ISO is to facilitate trade but helps to develop and promote international standards for focus technology, scientific testing processes, working conditions, social issues, and more, ensuring that products are consistently safe and of the best quality for the consumer. The standard helps companies to increase productivity.

ISO’s headquarters are in Geneva where a central secretariat oversees operations. It consists of members’ representatives and elected leaders with chief officers. The General Assembly is its decision-making body

What Is ISO Certification

ISO certification is a certification which gives a body’s assurance that a service, product or system meets the requirements of the standard.  When ISO develops standards, third-party certification bodies certify conformity to those standards.

According to ISO, the phrase “ISO Certification” should never imply that the product or system is fully identified by the ISO standard

The process of getting certified for an ISO standard can be expensive, time-consuming and potentially disruptive to the business. Before taking any steps to get certified, determining the need for certification can be the most important step.

The steps to certification include determining whether the cost of certification is worth it. The factors to be followed for certification are regulatory requirements, commercial standards, customer needs, improved consistency, customer satisfaction.

The certification process for ISO standards varies, depending on the standard and the certifying body. For popular standards, organizations may need to first review and select a suitable certification body.
