Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which the number of platelets in the blood is lower than normal. Platelets play an important role in blood clotting and are essential for wound healing and bleeding.
The main causes of low platelet count are two: destruction of platelets or insufficient production of platelets. When the blood platelet count begins to decrease, it is called thrombocytopenia.
According to experts, some other causes of low platelets are anemia or low hemoglobin and red blood cells in the blood, viral infections, leukemia, chemotherapy, excessive alcohol consumption, and vitamin B12 deficiency.
Apart from this, platelets can decrease due to severe cancer or various serious diseases of the gallbladder. Also, platelet breakdown can occur due to bacterial inflammation in the blood, drug reactions, and immune-mediated diseases.
What happens when platelets decrease?
It is not the case that the patient will suddenly die of hemorrhage as soon as the platelets are depleted. A type of minor capillary bleeding occurs in the body when platelets decrease. Platelet targets are not the same in all diseases.
Platelets are the smallest of the three types of blood cells in human blood. It helps in blood clotting. So if it decreases it can lead to bleeding and if it increases blood clotting can lead to heart attack and brain stroke.
Signs of decreased platelets
Fine bleeding from any part of the body, which appears in the form of pinpoints. Purple marks appear on the skin. Because, bleeding occurs under the skin.
- Excessive menstrual bleeding.
- Bleeding from the gums or nose may occur.
- Bleeding with urine or stool.
- Bleeding for a long time if cut anywhere on the body etc.
- What to do in dengue fever
In case of dengue, do not check the platelet count frequently, but observe other aspects of the patient. For example, whether the blood pressure is normal or not, whether the patient is suffering from dehydration or not, whether he is able to eat enough or not, what is the PCV or hematocrit of the blood, should be seen. Fluid should be given accordingly (fluid correction). Blood pressure should be checked.
No medicine other than paracetamol should be given for fever or pain. Diclofenac and other painkillers in particular can cause harm.
If necessary, seek urgent advice from a registered physician or hospital admission.
Understanding the impact of low platelet count on the body is crucial. It can lead to serious health issues and complications, highlighting the importance of regular medical check-ups and a balanced lifestyle. By raising awareness about this condition, we can empower individuals to prioritize their health and seek timely medical intervention if needed.
