Finland! Finland! Finland!

A northern European country. The happiest country in the whole world. Finland is basically known for its natural scenarios. A very popular spot for tourists. Main attraction is Aurora. The dancing lights capture everyone’s heart. But you will be surprised to know some of the Finnish culture. They are highly unique. In this blog I will write about 3 very unique aspects of Finnish culture!

The Unique Concept of “Sisu”

Ever heard of “Sisu”? It’s this Finnish concept that’s all about inner strength and determination that dates back hundreds of years in Finland and until now Finns follow during their everyday lives. It means perseverance, strength or determination. When Finns face hardship, Quitting isn’t in their nature. They just keep going, no matter how hard it gets. They keep pushing themselves until they complete the task. As they say: what must be done-regardless of the cost-will be done.

Another interesting thing, once Finns make up their mind, that’s it. They are all about sticking to their decisions, no matter the challenge. No matter how hard things get, Finns stay determined and succeed when most would give up.

The Finnish state makes sure expectant mothers receive a baby box

As I mentioned earlier, Finland has an excellent welfare system that promotes the well-being of Finnish citizens. As part of this, To help expectant mothers, the Finnish government gives them a baby box, stocked with all the basics for their new baby. The box can be considered a starter kit as it contains necessities ranging from baby products to indoor and outdoor clothes to help mothers care for their newborn babies.

The baby box even acts as a crib, which is a bonus. This tradition has been around for over 80 years in Finland. It’s no wonder Finland ranks so high for having one of the lowest infant mortality rates worldwide.

2 million Saunas in the Country

One of the most mind-blowing facts about Finland is that the country is home to over 2 million saunas. That’s a serious sauna culture! Can you believe that? Especially if we consider that Finland’s population is only about 5,5 million!

For Finns, the sauna is very important. It’s a perfect place to cleanse both their bodies and mind, relax and enjoy the present moment but also to meet new people and socialize. Besides, research shows that going to the sauna regularly (optimally several times a week) has many health benefits, including decreasing the risk of heart attack and dementia. Thus, Finns go very often to the sauna in their home, in the gym, or at work. When visiting Finland, you may find saunas in quite unexpected places, such as in student accommodation or diplomatic buildings as well. Crazy!! Right?

Hopefully, this blog will surprise you with some crazy Finnish culture facts. If you ever visit Finland, it will be less surprising because you’ll already know about some of these facts! If you get lucky and go on a tour in Finland, you’re going to witness the fascinating aspects.
