Nowadays we see women are involved in many workplaces. Move easily from one place to another. Though Women are better today, still far from being equal to men. Besides, women move into paid work and go outside the home.
Shifting in the 21st century, when women leave the home and enter the public sphere, it can be seen that women only participate more in certain specific workplaces and it varies depending on the individual’s socioeconomic status and environment.
For Example, Most educated women are employed as garments or office nannies, sweepers, various domestic workers, etc., and semi-educated women living in flood-affected or geographically low levels are also involved in various labor occupations.
On the other hand, fairly educated women are connected with professions such as nursing, teaching, etc. Besides, among highly educated women, it can be seen that there are most BCS post candidates of women who are expected to get a job. Moreover, they are involved in various humanitarian professions such as doctors, teachers, etc.
Today women’s work is sometimes referred to as the 5 Cs: cleaning, catering, cashiering (retail), clerical work, and caring. Men who work in these female-dominated sectors are more likely to hold senior or managerial roles.
So, What is the reason? Did you think about it?
Globally, only 29% of women participate in business or senior positions. But what is the reason behind this differin rent?
Gallup shows in his research paper that” Women have come a long way from the days when men controlled money and women’s careers were limited. For both sexes in the 21st century, barriers to education, job application, increased female entry into the workforce, and career choices still exist. (Gallup B, 2022).
Employers always adhere to a stereotype (conventional belief) that women are emotional, incapable of managing teams, excuses for leaving due to family issues. Similar stereotypes exist in the family.
For example: girls are less talented than boys, so they should be taught humanities rather than science, and should not be allowed to study or work further away.
In the case of a job candidate’s girl child, the family expects teaching, nursing, or office work i.e. domestic or small-scale woman will choose their workplace. These issues are working as a kind of influencer in women’s choice of the workplace at present.Society and various restrictions, particularly leaving out influences and family socio-economic contexts, hinder women’s career choices.
In the global context, the female entrepreneur/employee ratio is less than 50%, above where only 15% are business directors or CEOs. And this fact proves that long-term gender equality is the only way forward.
Women are defined as subordinates and assigned lower positions in the public and private sectors (National Policy Framework, 2003).
“Compared to other countries, the wage disparity in our country has decreased. But women’s workplace is still limited to certain boundaries. percent of women have to face increased competition due to technology in the job field. Women do not get enough training opportunities. As a result, they fall behind.
In conclusion, it can be stated that gender roles and pay gaps still exist in our society, and women are victimised for career choices.
