Ruma Devi, a 33-year-old artisan from Rajasthan’s Barmer region, has overcome her humble beginnings to become an honored speaker at Harvard University, showcasing her unwavering determination and resilience.

A Stratospheric Evolution

Ruma Devi, who was born and reared in the Barmer area of Rajasthan, advanced quickly through the ranks until she was granted the chance to present at the 17th Annual India Conference at Harvard University in February 2020. She discussed microbusinesses and the untapped potential of women. Ruma admits that she never saw herself getting to this point in life and that she had no idea it was even feasible. She didn’t respond until after a month had passed and she had heard back from Harvard before accepting the offer.

Hardships and Trials

Ruma experienced hardships throughout her youth, starting with her mother’s untimely passing. After her father’s second marriage, she was left to look for her uncle and aunt. She was naturally talented at stitching and sewing, but she struggled to put her skills to use outside the home. She was forced to drop out of school after Class 8 because of financial issues. At 17, she was married off with prosperity and happiness in mind. Her kid was born with health problems, and because the family couldn’t afford the necessary medical attention, he barely lived for 48 hours.

The Beginning of Her Sewing Career

Strong woman Ruma Devi cofounded a sewing company with two other local women. They were able to complete their assignment, but a sewing machine was still required. To purchase an old machine, ten women gathered together and each donated Rs. 100. Even after mastering every aspect—from invoice generation to packing techniques—they still had trouble marketing their products despite their best efforts. Ruma’s first important achievement was a result of her partnership with the nonprofit organization Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

Ruma, a skilled seamstress, joined Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan to meet with officials and meet deadlines. The group expanded, attracting more Rajasthani women artisans. Despite initial resistance, they persevered, generating notable outcomes and higher income. Their shared sense of achievement and financial independence became defining characteristics of their journey.

Empowering and Uplifting the Community

Ruma’s vision enabled the tribe of women to grow. Today, it has 30,000 active women spread over 25 districts in Rajasthan. Their talented handiwork is displayed in a variety of goods, such as garments and bags, resulting in monthly revenues of up to Rs 15,000 each month. These talented women have proudly graced prestigious events like Lakme Fashion Week in addition to showcasing their designs in Germany.

Barmer To Delhi: A Journey of Recognition

Ruma Devi took advantage of a chance to display their goods in a Delhi expo while they were experiencing growing popularity; this was her first time outside Barmer. She was disappointed to see that Barmer wasn’t acknowledged at the show, which led to a commitment to increase the popularity of their art form and make Barmer its face. This trip to Delhi paved the way for several significant events, including an unexpected invitation from the German organizers of the 2017 Heimtextil Fair. Even though it caused a financial scramble and eventually required help from other groups, they managed to acquire a free stall.

A Global Impact

Upon arriving in Germany, a team of handcrafted artisans was captivated by the attention and admiration they received. Their success at Lakme Fashion Week, including a two-day sell-out, fueled their creative growth, resulting in a range of products including dresses, purses, kurtas, stoles, bed linens, pillow coverings, and curtains. This growth solidified their reputation as fashion industry pioneers.

Empowering Others

Sugdi Devi, a Sindhi immigrant, was motivated to become a master teacher and craftsman by Pakistani needleworker Ruma Devi. Sugdi collaborated with Ruma and the Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan despite having financial difficulties. Sugdi’s skill growth helped her acquire attention, and the Rajasthan District Administration recognized her. Ruma Devi is a modern-day inspiration who speaks at many forums and exhibits her works. Her experience is the epitome of grit and fortitude.
