Clothing expresses one’s personality, mood, culture, and creativity. Today’s world is always concerned about their clothing style, design, and, obviously, fashion. By keeping that in mind, clothing brands from all over the world bring variations in clothing design almost every day, while people’s tastes are also changing constantly. In the world of clothing brands, there’s always a lot of competition going on.
While all brands are trying really hard to survive in the competition, a clothing brand from Bangladesh really stands out in the crowd.
In the evening, YSSE had a great conversation with the CEO of Tapered, Raiyan Chowdhury. In the conversation, he shared the journey of Tapered, talked about himself, and gave so much motivation to the youth.
The 23-year-old young lad who is now purchasing his degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at North South University is a true multipotentialite who wants to do a lot of things in life. He is into TV shows, music, instruments, football, writing, and a lot more. But while trying out new things, Mr. Raiyan never lost his true passion for designing clothes and loves it more and more.
About the idea of starting a tailoring shop, Mr. Raiyan said that, “Tailoring was a natural extension of his life”. He added, “In my whole childhood, I never wore clothes like any other child, as my parents always used to take me to tailoring shops and make fotuas and kurtas out of ornas or to make suits in their own design instead of buying them from shops.”
From the very beginning of childhood, Raiyan developed an interest in tailoring, which always made him want to do something different than other designer brands. In the early days, he used to buy clothes at a cheap price from Banga Bazar market in Dhaka and used to sell those outside with his cousin, but that didn’t quench his desire to start his own brand but rather fired up his desire as he realized that those products weren’t his.
Raiyan says, “While doing that business, I wasn’t satisfied with it as I felt that those products weren’t mine. I always wanted my own business, my own designs, and my own facilities. It has to be something different; otherwise, there’s no creativity in it”.
As he thought, on a sudden day he made up his mind to make sure that there was no back out. He selected the name for his brand, made the logo, and the journey of Tapered started.
On the journey from the beginning to now, Raiyan always had two important people beside him. He says, “My mother is the biggest cheerleader of my life; she always celebrates every little thing in my life, while I saw my father as an inspiration to go higher.”
While talking about obstacles, he says that the obstacles he faced were learning to do every little thing by himself without getting anyone’s help.
In the competitive world of clothing, Tapered doesn’t think of any other brand as their competitor. Through his observations, he found that every brand has its own uniqueness. They all made clothes that were different from other brands. For example, a brand might make T-shirts that are bigger than Tapered, but he doesn’t think of them as a competitor because Tapered doesn’t make T-shirts.
Raiyan wants Tapered to be a traditional brand with a fun aspect, catchy design, embroidery, and also a new-generation fashion taste. Tapered believes that “our products are made for decades, not years”.
Back in 2019, it had just been four months since Tapered started its journey when the Corona pandemic hit. The Corona almost shut down Tapered, but Rayan was specific about what he actually wanted and how to make things work. He knows that he is not someone who will just sit idle but will constantly be busy doing something.
Raiyan says, “The thing that always makes me keep going is that I get to do what I want.” He added that he is not the type of person to do a 9-to-5 job. He wants to free his thoughts. He wants freedom in his work and to do what he wants, which is the result that we can see in Tapered clothes.
There are many things that Tapered keeps in mind while designing clothes, but one thing that they consider to be their main motto is that “Our clothes have confidence in them.”
Tapered, make sure that you like what you wear and always have confidence in it. Raiyan says that “whenever I wear Tapered clothes, I feel confident in myself; I know that I’m looking good, and that’s exactly what I want others to feel when they wear our products.”
We all think of something as an achievement in life, but when I asked Raiyan about his achievement, he said that “the biggest achievement in my life is that I learned to take risks”.
For youth, Raiyan had one thing to say: “If you want to do something in life, the first thing you need to do is get the knowledge to know where you need to work hard”.
