Many stars have arrived in the world of cricket, there will be more in the future. But how many cricketers have these qualities of responsibility, punctuality, hard work, and fighting spirit for the team? But crores of cricket lovers know that we have one in Bengal and that was Shakib Al Hasan. One of the best stars of today’s generation of Bangladesh is Shakib Al Hasan, a witness of joy and sorrow in colorful or white clothes. 

Shakib Al Hasan is a Bangladeshi cricketer known for his all-round performance on the field. In 2015, he became the first player to hold the number 1 spot in the ICC Rankings for all-rounders across all three formats of the game.

* Birth & Academic Career :

Shakib Al Hasan was born March 24, 1987 in Magura. His father Masroor Reza who once played football in Magura and his mother Shirin Reza.

Shakib was admitted to AIUB in BBA in the academic year of 09-10. Shakib’s studies almost stopped due to spending most of his time on the cricket field. But he wanted to complete his studies. Although he was irregular, he didn’t stop his studies. Lastly, he graduated in 2023, albeit somewhat late.  He married Ummey Ahmed Shishir on 12 December 2012. They have two daughters and a son. 

* Debut in International Cricket :

Shakib Al Hasan made his debut on 6 August 2006 in the ODI tour of Zimbabwe. In his debut match, he took 1 wicket with 39 runs in 10 Overs. Later, he played an unbeaten innings of 30 runs off 49 balls and Bangladesh won that match. That day’s 8-wicket win was just the beginning. After that Shakib’s contribution to Bangladesh is known to all.

On 28 November 2006, Shakib made his T-20 debut against Zimbabwe. Shakib scored 26 off 28 balls. He got a bowling figure of 1/31.

Then made his Test debut against India in Chittagong on 6 May 2007. In this debut match, he got a bowling figure of 62 runs in 10 Overs with 0 wickets and played 30 runs off 47 balls. 

* Shakib’s achievements in Cricket :

Shakib has played 66 Tests, 235 ODI, and 117 T-20 matches in his Golden International career.

Shakib owns 4454 runs in 5 Test centuries. One of the best all-rounders in modern cricket has scored 7211 runs in ODIs with 9 centuries. Shakib’s successful T-20 collection is 2382 runs. 

This left-handed all-rounder owns 233 wickets in Test matches, 305 wickets in ODI matches, and 140 wickets in T-20 matches.

No one has come close to Shakib among all-rounders in the last 17 years. Shakib became the first and only cricketer in the world to become the number one all-rounder in all three editions simultaneously. Shakib dominated the all-rounder rankings for almost an era. Shakib is still the top all-rounder in ODI and T20 formats. He is number 3 in the list of top Test all-rounders.

Shakib has been selected as Sportsman of the Year four times in the Prothom Alo Sports Award, one of the best recognitions in Bangladesh. 

* Shakib as Captain :

In 2009, Shakib led the Bangladeshi team as the first acting captain. Under the leadership of Shakib, Bangladesh toured the West Indies in 2009 and won the Test and ODI series. Shakib also led the 2011 World Cup in Bangladesh. Later Shakib lost the captaincy in the face of many controversies. Shakib has also been involved in controversies at various times in his career. He has also been banned for various periods.

Shakib is also leading Bangladesh in this year’s 2023 World Cup.

* Shakib’s contribution in IPL and domestic matches :

 A few days after joining BKSP in 2002, Shakib Al  Hasan got a chance in the under-19 national team. Then in 2004, Shakib was called to play in the domestic league of Khulna division. 

In 2005, Shakib himself scored his 86-ball first century and took 3 wickets in the final of the Tri-series with England and Sri Lanka for the under-19 national team. His performance wins the team easily. 

During 2005-2006, he played 18 matches for the under-19 team. He scored 563 runs in 18 matches. Run average above 35 and take more than 20 wickets. 

Shakib came to the attention of Chief Selector Farooq Ahmed due to his consistent performances in U-15, U-17, and U-19 and being able to make a special contribution to winning the team in the U-19 tri-series. And finally got a chance to play in the national team. 

Shakib has become one of the most expensive stars in Bangladesh today. He has established himself as one of the best stars in T20 leagues like IPL. In 2011, Shakib was bought by the KKR for 4 lakhs 25 thousand dollars. In the 2018 IPL auction, Shakib Al Hasan was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 2 Crores. 

Shakib has played in Australia’s Big Bash, Pakistan’s PSL, West Indies CPL, and Sri Lanka’s SLPL. Among them, his 6 wickets for 6 runs in CPL is one of the best bowling in T20.

 * Shakib Al Hasan’s contribution in Charity :

Apart from being a cricket star, Shakib is also known as a national role model who has participated in Charitable activities for underprivileged children throughout his career. In 2013, Shakib was appointed as one of UNICEF’s National brand ambassadors and participated in several flagship programs and campaigns of UNICEF. Some of his activities include the Mina Media Awards, 25 years of the Charter of Rights of the Child, every Child Alive, Online Safety, and World Immunization Week. 

He also visited a refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar to create awareness about the vulnerable situation of Rohingya Children.  

Lastly, we can say that Shakib is a legendary player of Bangladesh. Which can be declared as a legend in the playing life. That’s what the statistics say or will say. Cricket experts from many countries will enviously declare that Shakib Al Hasan is the player who ruled the cricket world from number 1 in all three forms of cricket for a long time.
