Life seems easy when you find everything on your device, right? In the modern era of technology, we can use devices not only as a medium of communication but also as a medium of education. But we must not be so overwhelmed by putting a curtain on the pernicious effect of the device-centered education system on youths.

There is no doubt that a device-centered educational approach has made the study smoother as we can learn everything on our devices. From developing new skills to accomplishing tasks, devices reign everywhere. But it is a concerning fact that today’s generation is getting more attached to devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, and other technologies, and the device-centered education approaches have exaggerated this addiction to an alarming level. It feels like devices have taken control over us and we let these devices control us! Here are some of the key effects of this device-centered educational approach:

Deteriorated academic performance:

As students are excessively dependent on digital tools, they are more inclined to passive learning experiences that hinder their problem-solving and analytical skills. As a result, a growing tendency develops within the students not to want to solve problems on their own.

Exacerbation of educational inequalities:

Not all students have equal access to devices and essential tools needed to participate actively in digital learning. The increasingly technology-based educational landscape can put some students at a disadvantage position due to their poor economic background or lack of accessibility to digital tools.

Prolonged screen hours:

Prolonged screen hours adversely affect students’ health, leading to eye strain, sleep issues, and overall physical well-being. Sometimes the body feels tired, the eyes get strained, and vision seems blurry because of longer screen time. However, no choice is left to avoid devices where the educational system is entirely device-centered.

Insomnia epidemic:

Disrupted sleep issues are very common among students nowadays. Sometimes, students have to be on the devices for longer hours at night to complete their assignments, and home tasks which disrupt their sleeping patterns, leading to serious health issues in the long run.

Social isolation:

Do you feel a sense of emptiness if you are away from your dear devices for a moment? This is so true for today’s generation, especially students. Device-centered education systems have a stronger connection with devices, but what about the social connection? Due to the increased use of devices, students have become less socialized in real life. It feels like youths are trying to escape from socializing!

Attention deficit

Researchers have found that the retention power of memory becomes shorter among those students who excessively use devices. Suppose you have taken your mobile phone to google something for your research project and are already dealing with attention deficiency. If notifications from your social media accounts pop up at that time, will you be able to retain your focus as sternly as before? Absolutely Not! Because your brain will signal you to check those notifications and once you have gone there, you will find yourself wasting several hours as well!

It’s not like that devices are the enemy of our lives! Even if we are aware that a rapid transformation has been made due to leveraging the benefits of device-centered education systems, we should also address the dark sides that get overlooked most often! Too much of anything is never a good choice! Making a balance is always a wise choice and this is what we must follow.
