The entertainment industry has changed significantly over the past few decades. The emergence of OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ is now challenging the ascendancy of traditional media like television, radio, cinema, etc. The conflict between these two platforms is changing our way of consuming content, storytelling, and character transformation. The battle is not only about technology but also about popularity, accessibility, efficiency, and audience preferences. But which one of them is winning?
Flourishing of OTT Platforms
Nowadays, people can enjoy ad-free and personalized content on OTT platforms. They can enjoy their favorite content whenever they want. On the other hand, traditional TV offers people the ability to watch scheduled content.
Why OTT is winning over audiences
- Diversification of Content: Platforms like Netflix and Amazon introduce a wide range of genres to the audience, such as action, drama, comedy, horror, thriller, sci-fi, documentary, and many more.
- Accessibility: OTT platforms are highly accessible on all devices. One can enjoy it from smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, or whatever device they have.
- Affordability: If we compare it with the theater tickets, then OTT is far cheaper than that.
- No Ads (or Minimal Ads): OTT keeps in mind the viewer’s enjoyment without any interference, so they offer minimal ads or an ad-free experience.
Traditional Media: The Unshaken Pillar
With the rise of OTT, traditional media such as cable TV, radio, and movie theaters still hold the pillar and continue to have greater influence. Moreover, traditional media remains a trustworthy source for many people all over the world.
From Boomers to Gen Z: Why People Still Prefer Traditional Media
- Live Telecasting: Many big events like the FIFA World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, and award events live on TV still have control over the steering.
- Authentic News: OTT platforms are not formal media. So, it can often mislead audiences by spreading misinformation. But traditional media is formal. That’s why most of the time it ensures the authenticity of any news and information.
- Internet Connection is Not Necessary: Cable TV does not need any internet connection or high speed to provide the content. It is accessible in all types of areas (rural and urban).
- Big Screen: Unlike OTT, popular and blockbuster movies like Spider-Man and Oppenheimer can be enjoyed in theaters.
Who will win?
OTT and traditional media are both the future of our entertainment industry. Due to its affordability, availability, and diverse content, OTT is popular among people and is still growing as a strong platform. On the other hand, traditional media remains a powerful force due to its transparency, broad reach, and popularity. It is still a trustworthy source for the people and also a reliable medium of entertainment for most senior people.
Ultimately, the competition or rivalry between these two platforms is diminishing. Both of these play a significant role at different times. Traditional media dominates in live events and cultural milestones, and, on the contrary, OTT services offer people the ability to enjoy personalized content. Both formats will survive and grow together by using their specific strengths and adapting to the audience’s preferences.
The audience, which plays a key role in choosing how, when, and where they will consume content, is ultimately the real winner.
