Food is what we love to eat. Every day we purchase different types of food. We would like to eat all the food we purchase and prepare. But there is inevitably a certain amount that will be discarded, either because we leave it on our plates or because it spoils, decays, or is otherwise damaged or ruined before we get the chance to eat it.
On a global basis, at least one-third of all the food we produce goes to waste. Wastage of food is a curse for a developing country like Bangladesh.
Benefits of Recycling Wastes
Recycling means creating a new way to use an old thing. We can recycle plastic, aluminum, paper, and clothes but what about the food that we are wasting in every meal? Though we can recycle our food as well.
Doing this has the potential to drastically reduce the volume of garbage going to landfill, and can also save us money. Even though recycling food waste does not directly reduce food waste, it can at least prevent valuable nutrients from being lost forever. There are lots of benefits we can identify in terms of recycling waste food. Such As:
♦ Improved sanitation.
♦ Reversal of soil depletion.
♦ Better home gardens.
♦ Reduction in the need for artificial fertilizers and pesticides.
♦ Lower production of potent greenhouse gasses.
People waste food because they don’t create a sensible plan to reduce food waste, or to make sure they purchase only what they need and no more.
Recycling Food Waste at Home
- Composting is the most popular method of home food recycling. It involves controlling the decomposition process of food waste to ensure that it is turned into useful and reusable products.
- The worm can break down any of your food waste and other organic matter into fertile compost which you can reuse in your garden. Having a little worm farm nearby your garden may help you a lot.
- You can also donate the unused foods to nearby help centers or give the food to the random animals moving outside to eat.
Why is recycling necessary?
There are many reasons why recycling is essential. Not only can it help reduce your carbon footprint, but it also helps reduce the need for harvesting raw materials, saves energy, reduces greenhouse gasses, prevents pollution, and many more.
- Conserving natural resources.
- Protecting ecosystems
- Reducing demand for raw materials.
- Saving energy.
- Cutting climate-changing carbon emissions.
- Cheaper than waste collection and disposal.
- Tackles youth unemployment.
- Helps to improve plantations.
Food brings people together on many different levels. It’s nourishment of the soul and body; it’s truly love.
– Giada De Laurentiis
The food waste hierarchy states that before anything else, edible food waste should be used to feed humans. Food waste still fit for consumption can be supplied to food banks and other charities who will then make it available to hungry people.
