When we think about enrolling in a degree, we find some limited predefined degrees to choose from. But are these limited programs still relevant for everyone? Especially in this industrial and AI-driven era? What if students had the freedom to design their majors by choosing courses according to their own interests and goals? There would be a revolution, right? In fact, this revolution is already happening quietly in many universities around the world. And the rising of these individuals-choosing programs are known as Self-Designed Degrees or Individualized Studies Program.

This new approach to education is redefining education, breaking the mold, allowing students to design their own degree according to their future goals and interests.

What does it exactly mean?

A Self-Designed Degree is a course of study created by the students themselves. It gives the opportunity to the students to design their own learning. Students can blend the courses from different departments and design a curriculum that best suits their interests and career objectives.

For example: A student wants to become a smart farming inventor. He might design a program named AgriTech and Smart Farming by blending the courses of Crop Production from Agriculture, Data Analytics from Computer Science, and IoT and Robotics from Engineering.

We can think it from another way. If we imagine the predefined courses from universities as a meal menu, then the self designed degree is like a unique meal especially for yours, which is made by a private chef according to your interesting ingredients.

Why Self-Designed Degrees emerging?

Self-designed degrees are emerging in various universities around the world as a quiet revolution. This happening for some reasons like as:

Modern Job Market’s Demand: In this data science era, modern job market requires a blend of knowledge from different disciplines that often don’t fit from a conventional major.

Students’ Personal Interests: In conventional majors, they boundaries the students’ future. On the other hand, self-designed degrees give flexibility with students’ interest, take ownership to education which leads to a greater engagement.

How Self-Designed Degrees Redefine Education?

Self-designed degrees redefine education by empowering students to design their own learning. Instead of the conventional predefined curriculum, students can craft a personalized course of study which aligns with their own interests and future goals. From one-size-fits-all, they emphasize one-size-fits-one.

Besides this, self-designed degrees promote interdisciplinary learning by blending the courses of students’ interests. Also many students have diverse interests that can be satisfied only by self-designed degrees. And most importantly, these programs prepared by students according to their own future goals. Which separate self-designed degrees from the conventional predefined major.

Navigating Challenges

While benefits of self-designed degrees are clear, this path has also some challenges that you must undergo to embrace the benefits. One of the main challenges of this is the lack of structure. Students have to struggle to balance the degree. Another one is recognition. While these degrees are relatively new, some employers may be unfamiliar with their values.

The main hurdles would be the acceptance of university. Universities must offer flexible courses and cross department coordination. Supportive administrative framework would be helpful to craft a self-designed degree.

The Future of Self-Designed Degrees

Self-designed degrees are not just a trend. They actually meet the purpose of education. In this industrial emerging era, self-designed degrees would be more valuable day-by-day. As industries continue to require interdisciplinary skills and knowledge, self-designed degree will be the best choice for a sustainable future.
