Have you seen birds and animals near you? They do not create discrimination among each other. They live harmoniously. All are equal and free to move anywhere they want. Equalism is a philosophical concept that came from equality. It is a basic human right. United Nations mentioned in their 7th article,
“All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.”
Every year we celebrate “Human Rights Day” on December 10 as a reminder to treat each other equally and kindly.
Equalism advocates that every human being regardless of their gender, race, religion, language, and socioeconomic characteristics should have equal rights and treatment. But if we look back at history, people discriminate against their own kind based on the above-mentioned factors like the slavery of African black people. African people had to fight for their own freedom, they were neglected only because of their skin color. Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the struggle against apartheid. Nelson Mandela said,
“To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.”
We do not have to look any further. If we look at Bangladesh’s history of independence, it started with discrimination in the language, and then the bigger picture came forward that we were getting discriminated against in every part. We fought for our freedom and established equity in our country by fulfilling people’s rights. But if we see the current situation, are we really getting equal rights as a human being? Are we getting treated equally?
In Bangladesh, women are working and getting their education. They are not lagging behind in any sector other than men. But in our masculine-dominated society, women are still oppressed. Societies are consistently trying to cut off the wings that they built with hard work and sacrifices. In our country, third-gender persons are frequently denied basic citizenship rights such as property, health, job, education, and political rights as a result to continue living they started begging, prostitution, and other criminal activities have become increasingly common among them. They also have the right to live like a normal person, have an education, and do normal jobs.
If we look around, socioeconomic discrimination is increasing day by day. Due to the country’s hybrid democratic system, the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer. As a result, poor people are not being able to fulfill their basic human needs. Their rights are being violated by rich people.
Let us imagine, what if there were a world where people were treated equally and not being judged because of their skin color, race, gender, and economic status. Then that world would be full of flowers and there would be no need for laws because people would be there for each other. No violation and no discrimination, only kindness for each other. Let us be the first to start this trend, where we will treat everyone equally and kindly.
