Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Meditation was originally aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of sacred and mystical forces of life. Today meditation is often used for relaxation and stress reduction.

Meditation is considered a tonic for the body and mind. Meditation can induce a state of deep relaxation and a peaceful mind. While meditating, you focus your attention which can clutter your mind and cause stress. This process can lead to better physical and mental health. 

The popularity of meditation is growing more and more. People discover its many benefits. People also use this practice to develop other beneficial habits such as positive mood and outlook, self-discipline, healthy sleep habits, and enduring pain.

 * Types of Meditation :

Meditation is an umbrella term for many ways to achieve relaxation. Many types of meditation techniques contain meditative elements.

  • Guided meditation : 

This meditation allows you to form mental images of places or situations that you find relaxing. You try to use as many senses as possible like smells, sounds, and textures. You may be guided through this process by a mentor.

  • Mantra meditation : 

In this type of meditation, you silently repeat a calming word, thought, or expression to forestall diverting concentration. 

  • Mindfulness meditation : 

In mindfulness meditation, you widen your conscious awareness. You focus on what you experience during meditation like the progression of your breath. You can notice your thoughts and emotions.

  • Qi-gong :

This is part of Chinese meditation. This meditation generally combines relaxation, physical movement, and breathing activities to restore and maintain a healthy balance.

  • Yoga :

 Yoga is a mental and physical practice that helps develop strength and flexibility. It can also help to control pain and reduce stress. Different types of yoga incorporate physical postures, breathing activities, and meditation. 

* Some benefits of meditation :

*Reduces stress: 

Stress reduction is one of the most common reasons people try meditation. One research concluded that meditation is effective in reducing stress. Usually, mental and physical stress will lead to increased levels of the stress hormone Cortisol. This produces many harmful effects of stress such as the release of an inflammatory substance called Cytokines. These effects can disrupt sleep and raise depression and anxiety, increasing blood pressure and foggy thinking. So, meditation is important to reduce stress.

* Anxiety Management :

Meditation can help counteract the effects of anxiety often thought of as feelings of fear, worry and excessive stress by slowing racing thoughts and regulating breathing, helping to calm the nervous system. Physical symptoms of anxiety can include sweating, dizziness, and a rapid heartbeat due to Overthinking. People with anxiety who practice meditation regularly notice positive effects on their mental health. 

* Lower Blood Pressure :

Hypertension also called high blood pressure is accessed to affect one billion people worldwide. Meditation has been noted to possibly give promising results in decreasing high blood pressure, especially when paired with healthy lifestyle habits like a balanced diet and exercise. 

* Strengthen Immune System :

Meditation has also been shown to be an effective treatment for various conditions related to a weak immune system. Regular meditation has been shown to reduce the body’s stress, leading to less inflammation, and reducing the risk of chronic pain, fatigue, and Heart disease. 

* Generates Empathy and Calmness :

It has been observed that people who practice meditation tend to be more empathetic and kind to others. These people tend to convey positive emotions to others, forgive quickly, and move on. Meditation tends to improve interpersonal conflicts and spread positivity.

* Improves memory :

Meditation is best known for helping reduce stress and anxiety. It can also improve your brain structure. Researchers show that when you practice meditation, your brain can produce more gray matter. Gray matter is important for healthy brain cognition. It is also important for basic human functions, including the ability to control our emotions. Meditating 30 minutes a day can increase the amount of gray matter. 

Meditation is an art that anyone can practice. There are many benefits of meditation. No fancy equipment is needed. Just a soft and comfortable mat and a quiet room is needed.  If practiced regularly, meditation will bring lasting benefits to physical and mental health.
