What, the better you are at the subject and the more proficient you are in it, according to your CGPA? Sadly, reality tells a very different tale. If there was a choice, shouldn’t it be CGPA or Skills?

CGPA:

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is known as an evaluation technique that is used to analyze a student’s overall academic success.

Skill:

An aptitude and capability developed through a conscious, methodical, and prolonged effort to complete difficult tasks or jobs, duties involving thoughts (cognitive skills), things (technical skills), and/or people (interpersonal skills). Cognitive skills are reading, writing, thinking, paying attention, remembering, etc. Technical skills include programming languages, software proficiency, data analysis, technical writing, etc. Interpersonal skills are communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, etc.

Does CGPA or skills matter more?

“CGPA is the key to opening the door; once they filter based on CGPA, then your skill matters”.

Some chase the CGPA, some chase the skills. A majority person cannot balance both things. Both skills and a CGPA are necessary. Besides, we do not know which sectors need CGPAs and which sectors need skills. First, we need to determine our mission and which sector we will focus on in our careers. because different sectors have different criteria for recruiting.

More importantly, graduates must understand the value of knowledge and soft skills in achieving success without boundaries. Universities should therefore place more focus on helping students acquire the information and soft skills needed to fulfill employer demands and land a job in their field of study.

Universities should also put more of an emphasis on preparing students to meet the demands of employers, such as the need for appropriate soft skills and solid foundational knowledge, so that graduates may find employment in their field of study. A.K.M Fahim Mashroor said, “CGPA is only important to get a call in an interview without skill nobody wants to hire you”. Now, at a glance, we see which sector prefers CGPA or skill ;

Teaching profession

If you want to become a faculty member, you must focus on your CGPA. A higher CGPA is the first requirement to get your position. Besides, some soft skills are also required, like advanced verbal communication skills, emotional intelligence, social awareness, leadership, etc.

Corporate Job:

Positions within a corporate organization are referred to as “Corporate Jobs.” Typically, this refers to a job within a bigger business,  institution, or corporation. If you want to build your career in the corporate world, you must gather skills and experiences. Because in the corporate sector, skills, and experiences are prioritized over CGPA.

In corporate employment, certain abilities are constantly desired, such as communication,  project management, problem-solving, teamwork, and analytical capabilities. Putting these skills on display can help you land a corporate job. Gaining these abilities while working in a  corporate entry-level position might also make you a more desirable candidate as you advance in your career.

It sector:

The people who create, test, install, maintain, and repair hardware and software for Businesses are known as IT experts. In the IT sector, skills are preferred to CGPA. An average CGPA also matters to land your dream position. In the IT sector, some sorts of skills are mandatory, like strategic management skills, decision-making skills, programming languages ( C++, Java, Python, etc.), data management skills, etc. These skills are the core of the  IT sector.

Why does CGPA matter more than experiences and skills?

If you are a fresher, you need to average CGPA to enter your dream job. It is the key to open the door.  After placement, you judge by your skills and knowledge.

A good CGPA is like a beautiful flower vase. Skills, knowledge, and ability are the flowers in it. When you see a beautiful vase, you expect it to have beautiful flowers in it. But if it’s not there, you won’t buy it, isn’t it?

After placement, you judge by your skills and knowledge.

“A high CGPA is just an indication that the person is bright. It is never a standalone parameter for selection”.
