Located in the middle of Europe, Prague, or the “City of a Hundred Spires,” as locals lovingly call it, is a breathtaking combination of Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic architecture, with several hundred church towers and spires constituting its magical skyline. The capital of the Czech Republic is full of history, culture, and beauty, and a fairytale-like atmosphere pervades its cobblestone streets, ancient clocks, and towering castles. From its ancient Old Town Square and famous Charles Bridge to its massive Prague Castle and lively neighborhoods such as Mala Strana and Vinohrady, the city dazzles travelers with its ageless beauty and lively spirit.

Prague’s history spans more than a thousand years, and the streets of the city are a living museum of European history. The Old Town of the city, a World Heritage Site, is a maze of cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and secret courtyards. This 600-year-old wonder continues to amaze tourists with its daily display of moving figures and complex dials that monitor the position of the sun and moon. A short walk from here is Charles Bridge, a historic 14th-century stone bridge covered with 30 statues of saints. The bridge spans the Vltava River and provides views of Prague Castle and the city’s towers. Tradition has it that it will be good luck to touch St. John of Nepomuk’s statue on the bridge—a task that seems to be well within every tourist’s grasp.

Getting to Prague has arrived in the past.  The Old Town Square, a UNESCO World Heritage location and the epicenter of Prague is the place to be. There, you’ll discover the famous Astronomical Clock, a medieval engineering wonder that still follows the sun and moon’s paths. See the clock strike the hour, and you’ll be entertained by a parade of mechanical figures, a display that has been attracting visitors for centuries.

Across from Old Town Square, the Prague Castle towers above the city atop a hill.  This vast complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site in itself, is one of the largest medieval castle complexes in the globe. Among its walls, you will discover St. Vitus Cathedral, a Gothic architectural masterpiece, along with palaces, gardens, and museums. A stroll through the castle complex is a walk through centuries of Czech history, from the era of kings to the modern day.

Ruling over the city skyline, Prague Castle is one of the largest and oldest castles in the world. The vast complex has served as the seat of power for the kings, emperors, and presidents of Czech lands for more than a millennium. The castle complex also includes the Golden Lane, a picturesque street of multicolored cottages that once served as the residence of castle guards and craftsmen, among them the well-known writer Franz Kafka.

Prague is more than just a city steeped in history; it’s a lively cultural center. For centuries, it has attracted artists, writers, and musicians. Mozart debuted his opera Don Giovanni here, and the city’s passion for music thrives today with its renowned opera houses, concert venues, and jazz clubs. Art enthusiasts will discover a wealth of treasures in Prague’s galleries and museums. The National Gallery features an outstanding collection of European art, while the Mucha Museum honors the works of Alphonse Mucha, a key figure in Art Nouveau. DOX Centre for Contemporary Art provides innovative installations and exhibitions to those interested in contemporary art.

Prague’s beauty is not just in its great monuments, but also in its sweet little things. Wander through the city’s narrow, twisting streets, and you’ll find yourself stumbling upon cozy courtyards, secret gardens, and ancient shops. Get lost in the city’s winding alleys, and you’ll find a new surprise around every corner. It is this feeling of discovery that makes Prague so attractive. No visit to Prague would be complete without feeling its rich heritage. The city is replete with museums, galleries, and theaters.
