There are certainly some movies which influence and motivate audience to reach new heights and leave an everlasting impression in people’s minds.
Well, this movie is exactly like this. Can a man face a plethora of hardships both personally and professionally to pursue a bit of happiness, especially when the only happiness he knows of is the word “happyness’’ written on a wall? If you want to know the answer you have to watch the movie and it is based on a true story and this American film was directed by Gabriele Muccino ,written by Steven Conrad .The movie tries to show us that the trials and tribulations, fleeting ups and downs of a salesman named Chris gardener (Will smith) who faces several odds in his life while taking care of his son named Christopher ( Jaden Smith). The small bits of happiness they find in their togetherness provides a heartwarming plot for the film.
The story follows with the protagonist Chris Gardener who used to be top in his class in the navy yet was on the verge of bankruptcy. He invests all of his savings in a portable bone density scanner, which provides slightly denser pictures than x-rays for twice the money.
Later it led to losing all his family’s entire life savings, which ruins his family as his wife (Thandie Newton) leaves him and their 5 year old child Christopher and moves to new york to start a fresh life. Chris realizes that there is a little demand for this product ,rendering his stock in the company worthless .Without money and a life partner Chris finds it challenging to work his way from six month unpaid internship with a brokerage firm called Dean Witter to a single spot that many men were vying for .To add the misery he and his son were evicted from their apartment as he became unable to pay his bills and leaves his job as a salesman. At one point he even sold his blood to earn money. As they had no money they took place in a homeless shelter ,not only that they even spent an entire night in a subway bathroom and that was kind of scene where every audience’s eyes are bound to fill up with tears because people can feel the struggle of livelihood, homelessness and poverty of a single father.
There is another touching scene in this movie where father takes his son to play basketball.His son tries to put the ball in the net but he fails and his father says not to waste his time playing around with the ball anymore but his son becomes upset .Then he says to his son,
“Don’t ever let someone tell you ,you cant do something. Not even me.You got a dream ,you got to protect it.You want something, go get it.All right ?”
This is such a meaningful movie which will stay with you long after you leave the theatre. The movie shows us that fighting for our passion and for what we love despite our own hardships, struggles will get us the best result in the end .No matter how hard you get pushed down, you should always get up and keep going. Besides, the inimitable relationship between Will Smith and his real life son Jaden Smith makes the movie a crowd pleaser.
