Caroline is a faithful adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel. It is an animated dark fantasy movie released in 2009. It is still beloved by all ages of people.
Premise
Coraline Jones herself might not be a loveable little kid. She is a fascinating character. Yes, she is a little grumpy at first and may appear rather self-centered if we are truly honest with ourselves.
However, she barely exceeds the perilous line of being irritating, as she has a sense of adventure, intelligence, and imaginative thinking that renders her a pleasure to watch while having fun with or combating the terrible beasts in this film.
Characters
Both of Coraline’s parents aren’t amazing at all. They’re distracted, preoccupied, quarreling, and frequently sink over their desktops. They barely notice her each time she speaks. That explains why she crosses the tunnel carelessly, only to discover her other mom and dad awaiting her with roast chicken and fake happiness. For her to remain there, she simply requires buttons stitched into each of her eye holes.
This short story also does an excellent job of illustrating Coraline’s wants and disappointments in her everyday life. Regardless of what we might learn later, the Other World has an enjoyable life and awesome oddness that appears to reflect the world of imagination and fond desires that a lot of kids would seek from such a location: heaven-like food, funny talking animal pals, and an overwhelming feeling that we are beloved and are now with our preferred people. It’s creative and realistic, and it makes us want to go there as well if we don’t have any concerns about what is to come.
Animation Style
The animation is truly great. We will shake our heads in awe if we see the attention to detail underlying the braided webs of spiders and beautiful gardens that sparkle like millions of Christmas lights, with vibrant landscapes from the Other World.
What amount of effort and time was put into creating these massive, tiny settings and each character’s lucid facial expression and particular motion?
A special mention must be given to Selick’s exceptional direction, which carefully uses close-up shots to portray its key characters’ heightened nervousness and reactions, as well as smoothly flowing camera views that sweep over an area to capture the full scale of the unsettling struggle at hand.
World Building
While every detail in this film is composed of clay, the environment and everyone in it feel very alive and well, due to the extremely brilliant animators, whose tireless effort is seen here. Additionally, there is also a fantastic use of color. The gloomy, dark tones of real life contrast well with the flashes of vivid hues of red, green, and orange flooding the Other World.
Theme
The best part about the film is that it’s a genuine, dark fantasy story with a relevant theme about discovering the true value of what you’ve got right now and who you’re alongside, even when situations appear to be far from good. As we have been major fans of fairy stories since childhood, this proved to be a carefully designed, modern entry into a genre that we had not seen or been in love with. It will make us extremely proud to see anything so lovely and scary again, right away.
Music
The beautiful soundtrack and some of the jingles were composed by the French ‘Bruno Coulais.’ It was his first work on any American movie. Yet he excels by creating music full of awe, fantasy, and curiousness. Have a listen here.
Overall, this will be a great treat to ourselves if we give it a watch. So, gather your family or your friends and enjoy this gorgeous fairy tale.
