Jhumpa Lahiri’s debut nonfiction work is titled In Other Words. She writes about how growing up as the daughter of Indian immigrants in America left her feeling like she didn’t belong to either group, leading her to decide to learn Italian. The New Yorker editor Ann Goldstein translated the Italian-language book into English.
The book’s narrative lets you travel with Lahiri. At the same time, she discusses how she came to have a fascination with Italian and why, at the height of her fame, she decided to compose it in Italian instead of English. While many critics believe this to be a hasty and foolish decision, Jhumpa convincingly takes her position.
The chapters are brief and promise to be read quickly. It’s enjoyable to study the analogies between her use of Italian as a language of expression and the works of Ovid. Although she is unlikely to be recognized as an Italian author, her transition to writing in Italian provides food for thought. The reader will enjoy pacing through Jhumpa as she recalls how much she wished for such a life when living in America and gradually works on mastering the language. The specific event of how her husband, who did not speak Italian as well as she did (who had spent twenty years learning the language), was frequently mistaken for an Italian while she spoke it fluently, did not garner much attention.

By the time the book was finished, though, I couldn’t help but wish she had accentuated the ideas she had only briefly mentioned and deleted the ones she kept returning to. I found the book to be repetitive in several parts, much like standalone diary entries, which convey the same ideas in various ways.

Whilst I do recognize how far she has gone in learning the intricacies of a different language to the extent where her thoughts flow naturally in Italian, I did become tired of the repetitions. In Other Words, frequently had the feel of a practice book for Lahiri’s Italian. Jhumpa Lahiri has greatly expanded her literary horizons with this book, which is an incredible accomplishment. The work does not, in the reader’s opinion, match Jhumpa’s English writings in terms of refinement.

It’s a book about learning about oneself by finding freedom in the strangeness of learning a new language. If you’ve been a fan of Lahiri’s writing for a while and are curious about the adjustments she’s made to her life, this book would be a fantastic one to start. The author describes how she navigated the uncharted territory of linguistics and anonymity and discovered freedom through her love of Italian. Although this book is not steady, like a newborn taking its first few steps, I want to read other works by Jhumpa in Italian in the future that demonstrate her wonderful writing.
