Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, has left an indelible mark on the sport of swimming. With 23 Olympic gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals, Phelps has become synonymous with excellence in the pool.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 30, 1985, Phelps showed an early love for the water. He began swimming at the age of seven, and by the age of 10, he had already set national records. Although he did not win any medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, he used the experience to gain more knowledge and experience.

 

Phelps’ breakthrough moment came at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. There, he won eight medals, including six golds, two silvers, and set world records in several events. His performance in Athens announced him to the world as a swimming sensation and set the stage for his future Olympic achievements.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing (China), Phelps was unstoppable. He won eight gold medals, breaking Mark Spitz’s 36-year-old record of seven gold medals won at a single Olympics. 

Phelps’ feat was considered one of the greatest athletic achievements of all time, and he was honoured with the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award.

After a brief retirement, Phelps returned to the pool in 2012 and once again dominated the competition at the Summer Olympics in London. He won four gold medals and two silver medals, bringing his total Olympic medal count to 22. He then retired from competitive swimming, only to come out of retirement in 2014 to compete in the 2015 World Championships.

In 2016, Phelps once again represented the United States at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he won five more gold medals and a silver. This brought his total Olympic medal count to 23 gold medals, breaking the record for the most Olympic gold medals won by an individual.
