Staying up late and going to bed early in the morning has become one of the most common routines among the young generation. Insomnia has turned into an epidemic and mostly the youths are the victims of it! If you are asked why you don’t go to bed early and follow a normal routine, you will probably say you are an insomniac which is why you cannot sleep early at night. But this justification becomes unacceptable when you don’t even try to change the so-called new normal routine!
Have you ever thought that all those sleepless nights are doing severe damage to your body and mind, leading you to chronic diseases? If not, then it’s high time you considered the adverse impact of the insomnia epidemic.
Let’s dive into some of the key effects of this epidemic:
Social Isolation
If you start considering the night to be the day and the day to be the night, then it would alarmingly change your normal routine! At night, you will stay awake and be in front of your devices for the whole night and when the sunlight comes inside your window, you will pull your curtains to make the room dark so that you get sleep on that time! Isn’t it strange? This routine will push you to a life where you will feel isolated from your social life and you will be very lonely! Loneliness doesn’t come alone; it also brings depression alongside!
Excessive Screen Addiction
The way the young generation is getting addicted to devices is alarming! Excessive screen time is also a slippery slope towards the insomnia epidemic. Each night, the youths tend to be on the screen for a significant portion of the time. Sometimes that late-night screen time takes two or three hours of sleep time in the blink of an eye! And when they try to get some sleep, they can’t sleep as their brain is still in that zone of scrolling down newsfeed, checking mail, playing games, or other device-centered activities! Eventually, their eyes also get strained because of these excessive screen hours.
Deteriorated Performance in Academic and Professional Life
If you stay up late at night and don’t let your brain rest for a sufficient time, how can you expect your brain to perform proactively at work? Lack of sleep will deteriorate your academic and professional performance to a greater extent as your brain does not get enough time to rejuvenate and energize your body. As a result, you will feel under confident in accomplishing any activity where your brain has to be in full-active mode. Hence, it will make you question your ability and skills in extreme cases, making you perform poorly at crucial times.
Effect on physical health:
Sleep is the most essential medicine that your body needs. As such, physical health can be adversely affected by sleep deprivation but who cares? Nowadays, Youths are less concerned about their physical health while the scenario should have been different in this modern era. If you follow an abnormal routine, your immune system will get weakened. As a result, your body will lose strength to fight against any diseases. Your body will be a breeding ground for deadly and chronic diseases. Moreover, premature aging is another effect of sleep deprivation.
Effect on mental health
Are you feeling sick and tired of everything that you do? It is because your mind is tired! When you are an insomniac for a prolonged period, it not only affects your body but also takes a huge toll on the mind as well. It is obvious to be mentally drained if you don’t make a habit of sleeping early at night. Some people are so insomniac that they surrender themselves to taking sleeping pills to get a sound sleep and this is what makes the condition even worse! Consumption of sleeping pills has detrimental effects on the body and mind. As such, nobody should depend on these sleeping pills to get sleep rather trying different ways to fall asleep naturally should be on our priority list to lead a healthy life.
Therefore, the time has come to be more conscious about our health as health is the most precious wealth. If we don’t try to change our abnormal routines, we will do injustice to our bodies. Only saying that “I am an insomniac” will not help us get out of this dangerous epidemic that has been spreading unimaginably fast! And, we must have to say goodbyes to those habits which makes the condition of sleep deprivation to a more advanced stage.
