Keeping students engaged can be a challenge, but it’s especially tough on those fun-filled holidays that disrupt routines. Fear not, educators! Here are 5 classroom games you can use to supercharge engagement, even on those non-traditional learning days-

  1. Holiday Pictionary Relay:
  • Materials : Whiteboard/projector, markers/dry erase markers, divided slips of paper with holiday-themed words/phrases (e.g., Santa’s hat, turkey dinner, fireworks).
  • Gameplay : Divide students into teams. One student from each team comes to the front and draws a word/phrase from the pile without showing it to their team. They have a set time to silently draw the clue on the board.

Their team then has a set time to guess the word/phrase. Award points for correct guesses within the time limit. The team with the most points at the end wins!

  1. Holiday Charades Chain Reaction :
  • Materials : None!
  • Gameplay : Think classic charades, but with a twist! The teacher starts by silently acting out a holiday-themed word/phrase.

The first student who guesses correctly then acts out another holiday-related word/phrase linked to the first one (e.g., teacher acts out “Santa” – student guesses and acts out “presents”).

The chain continues until someone can’t guess or the time runs out. This game encourages quick thinking and creativity.

  1. Holiday Bingo :
  • Materials : Bingo cards with holiday-themed squares (e.g., wear red/green, hear a jingle bell, see someone wearing a hat), holiday-themed objects/pictures for calling out clues.
  • Gameplay : Distribute bingo cards to students. The teacher calls out clues related to the holiday or the objects/pictures on the cards. Students mark off the squares that match the clues.

The first student with a complete row, column, or diagonal wins! You can adjust the difficulty by using more specific or ambiguous clues.

  1. Holiday Minute to Win It Challenges :
  • Materials : Various items depending on the chosen challenges (e.g., cotton balls, spoons, ping pong balls, cups).
  • Gameplay : Set up a series of quick, holiday-themed challenges related to dexterity or problem-solving (e.g., stacking candy canes with mittens on, transferring cotton balls using spoons across the room).

Students compete individually or in teams to complete the challenges within a set time limit. This is a great way to get students moving and having fun.

  1. Holiday Trivia Throwdown :
  • Materials : List of trivia questions related to the holiday, answer sheet (optional).
  • Gameplay : Divide students into teams or play individually. The teacher reads out trivia questions related to the holiday.

Students can answer individually (write down answers) or shout out answers as a team (depending on the class size and noise level).

Award points for correct answers. The team/student with the most points at the end wins!

These games are all adaptable to different age groups and learning styles.

Remember to modify the difficulty, time limits, and materials as needed for your specific classroom. With a little creativity, you can keep students engaged and learning, even on those fun-filled holidays!

I hope these will be very helpful for teachers who want to entertain their students as well as bring focus on their study.
