Who hasn’t gone through the stage of interviews in their work life? Job hunting can be stressful but it is necessary. From scouring the job boards for the right fit to customizing your application to sailing through the interview, there’s a lot that goes into being the chosen candidate. So when you do finally get selected for the interview call and you mentally draw a picture of your interview day, how do you bring your A-game? How do you ace it?
The internet will suggest to you an ocean of ideas for how to be better at job interviews. Apart from the basics like dressing for the part, showing up on time, and bringing a copy of your CV, there’s so much more you can do.
The first few moments of your interview can have a decisive impact on how well the rest of it goes. What the interview board is trying to get is how you are as a person and whether you are able to handle the job pressure and meet the company’s agenda. Here’s how to start strong and nail every second of your interview:
- The Interview Starts From Your House: You don’t know when & who you bump into on your way to the interview. So try to be professional, conscious, and confident all the time. You need to give time to your body and mind to align in a line. That’s the crucial part of the interview.
- Treat Everyone You Meet As Your Interviewer: Make sure to be polite to everyone you come across in the interview process. This will be remembered after or come up into the table of discussion in that company if you are lucky enough to get the job.
- Have Your Story And Own It: Tell me about yourself is one of the most frequently asked questions in the interview board. Double-check you have a succinct and convincing answer to this. Enough of your bookish knowledge! The interview is not just about it. They know you have an educational background but what they are seeking is your presence. Be truthful to your background and yourself. Study your resume before the interview and try to speak confidently about your previous positions if you have and how they are linked to this company’s aim.
- Homework Is Everything: Each company has its own goals and objectives and as a candidate, you should know it ahead of time. Make sure that you have a solid understanding of their history up to this point and that you understand the company culture. Let them understand you are serious about your selection of a company and impress them with your research.
- First Impression Always Matters: Now, it’s time to make an impression. It is all about smiling confidently, making eye contact, and generally looking as if you’re glad to be there and you want the job. Lean in slightly and wait to be invited to sit down. In everything you do, try to project an attitude of energy, enthusiasm, and interest.
- Prepare Questions Beforehand: The company will ask you if you have any queries. Make sure to participate because this is a form of assessment in itself – the interviewer is checking if you are serious about this role or not.
- Small Talk Is Important: At the beginning of your interview, small talk provides you the confidence for the rest of your interview. You can easily slide into the interview like a seasoned pro and have control over yourself.
- Ever Heard Of Star Method?: You can easily stand amongst the crowd practising the star method. It is about telling the interview board about the obstacles, solutions to your problems, and the results you achieved.
STAR stands for:
- Situation: Present a picture in front of your board of any challenges with details that you might have faced before.
- Task: Inform them about your responsibilities in the situation.
- Action: Share how you overcame the challenge.
- Result: Discuss the result.
Win your interview like a pro with these guidelines. Interview is the most crucial part of job employment. It is not about your qualifications or grade but your skills and confidence in how you carry yourself in. The main focus is to be yourself, be cautious about oversharing & use an informal tone and salutations. ALL THE BEST.
