One of our natural resources is air. That air pollution is worldwide today. Every plant and animal relies on clean air for survival. Presently, our various activities consistently contribute to air pollution, negatively affecting the overall biodiversity of the environment.
Air pollution occurs when changes in the air’s composition harm plants and organisms or when the air becomes hazardous to humans and other living beings due to undesirable substances in the Earth’s atmosphere. In addition to naturally occurring gasses, human-induced factors introduce toxic gasses and fine particulate matter, further contributing to air pollution.
The severe adverse effects of air pollution on the living environment necessitate an understanding of its causes and occurrences. Air pollution stems from both natural processes and human activities.
Air pollution occurs mainly in two ways, naturally and as a consequence of human activities.
Air pollution caused by humans
Human-induced air pollution arises from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas in power plants, factories, vehicles, and other sources. This combustion releases pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and mercury. Industrial processes and manufacturing activities contribute by releasing toxic chemicals and particulate matter into the air. Waste incineration and the open burning of trash further introduce toxins like dioxins alongside particulate matter. Deforestation and changes in land use diminish air-purifying trees and vegetation.
Natural sources also play a role in air pollution, including dust storms generating particulate matter, volcanic eruptions releasing sulfur dioxide, ash, and other particles, wildfires producing smoke with particulate matter, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides. Emissions of methane and other volatile organic compounds from wetlands and natural areas, as well as biological particles such as pollen, spores, and other airborne elements from plants, trees, and microbes, contribute to air pollution.
Effects of air on human health
The impact of air pollution on human health is significant, posing a substantial threat to life through the inhalation of contaminated air. This exposure can lead to respiratory problems, including airway irritation, persistent coughing, and choking. Notably, sulfur oxides are associated with various lung diseases. Additionally, the toxic effects of nitrogen oxides can cause lung inflammation, potentially resulting in fatal water accumulation in the lungs. Extended exposure to high levels of air pollution may contribute to chronic conditions such as asthma, persistent airway inflammation, and hoarseness.
The impact of air pollution on animals
Polluted air contaminants animal feed. When animals consume these contaminated food, they get infected with various diseases and become sick.
The impact of air pollution on Plants
Prolonged air pollution causes extensive damage to plants. Due to its presence sulfur dioxide damages the chlorophyll of plants. During this time the food production of the plant decreases and the vitality is lost.
Acid rain due to air pollution
The combustion of surplus fossil fuels results in the release of sulfur and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Subsequently, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide react with water droplets in the atmosphere, forming sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
Climate change
There is a close interconnection between air pollution and climate change. The combustion of fossil fuels and the emissions from industrial plants release significant quantities of greenhouse gasses such as black carbon, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. These gasses contribute to both air pollution and climate change. The greenhouse effect they create impedes the Earth’s ability to radiate heat and cool down, leading to a gradual warming of the planet over time. This warming is responsible for various climatic phenomena and activities.
Air pollution is a serious threat to every nation. In this regard, the awareness of people all over the world is absolutely essential. Addressing air pollution is essential for the interest of the country and the nation.
